New Zealand

2012

The following is a narrative of the adventures Dylan and I had in November 2012 in New Zealand, mostly on the South Island.  The descriptions also serve as a guide to the photographs that follow.

After a long trip from Dulles Airport, with a change of planes on the West Coast, I arrived on the morning of November 7 at the Dunedin airport. I picked up a rental car, carefully staying on the “wrong” side of the road, and headed to Dunedin to meet Dylan at his shared living quarters near the University of Otago.

Dylan elected to take the fall semester of his sophomore year at Bowdoin abroad at the University of Otago.  His semester (studying?) there was just over when I arrived; our two-weeks together in New Zealand would now begin.

Following lunch in Dunedin, we headed out to the nearby Otago Peninsula. We spent the rest of the day there visiting the sights, including: Tunnel Beach; Hoopers Inlet, where we saw a beautiful multicolored “paradise” duck; the spectacular long curving beach at Sandfly Bay; and the stunning beach and dormant volcano at Sandymount Reserve.  We also enjoyed the Reserve’s dramatic cliffs, hills and sheep.
